Extra Credit Information
Note: All of the extra credit assignments described
below are worth up to 10 points each, and are due
on Thursday, Nov. 16. I will not accept late
assignments. You may earn a total of 20 points in extra credit. You
may turn in only one assignment under a particular category. Feel free to contact
me or talk to me in class if you have any questions about any of these
assignments.
1. Write Exam Questions
Write a total of 20 questions (10 multiple choice, 10 short answer) on
any of the material covered throughout the semester. Your questions should
not be the same as any of the midterm questions, however, you may change the
format of old exam question topics and ask the same information in a different
format. You need to include the answers to the questions you write,
although your grade on the assignment will not be based on how many of your
questions you answered correctly. If you write good questions, you may see
some of those same questions on the Final Exam, so it is to your benefit to
compose thoughtful, slightly challenging questions.
2. Marine Fishery Report
Write a 2 page report (typed, double-spaced) on the problems associated with a
marine fishery. Pick a fish (or two) from the "Avoid" list on
the Seafood
Watch brochure and conduct an online search for information about the
problems associated with that fishery. The website URL listed on that
brochure is a good starting point for your research since it provides
interesting and useful information about various fishery issues. Your
report may be longer than two pages; if you find a lot of interesting
information about a particular topic, don't feel like you need to restrict
yourself to two pages.
3. Lecture Topic Paper
Write a 2-page report (typed, double-spaced) on a topic presented in
lecture. For example, this may be a topic that I introduced in lecture but
did not go into detail, and you wish to research it further. Or it may be
based on a student question that I did not answer fully in class. You must have
the topic approved by me first. You will need to include a bibliography that
lists all the references that you used in your paper.
4. Field Trip Report
You may go on a field trip to a local museum/zoo/aquarium and write a 2-page
report (typed, double-spaced) on any of the displays you
saw. If the museum/zoo displays do not contain a lot of biological
information, you can supplement your paper with information from other resources
(books, internet, etc.). You will need to include a bibliography that
lists all the references that you used in your paper.
I will be taking one of my
classes on a tide pool field trip to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro (Sun.
Nov. 5 12:30-3:30pm). You are welcome to accompany me and my class on this field trip and
complete the handout I will provide in lieu of going on an individual field
trip. You can access more information about this upcoming field trip,
including detailed location and agenda on the "Field Trip Info"
page.
